Shakespeare's Rose Theatre Grand Opening

19 June 2018

Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre, Europe’s first pop-up Elizabethan theatre, had its grand opening this week in York, along with a free-to-enter Shakespeare’s Village. Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, attended to bless the theatre and actors at the opening ceremony. The theatre houses 950 people, with 600 seated on three tiered balconies around an open-roofed courtyard and standing room for 350 ‘groundlings’. Four of the Bard’s greatest works, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo & Juliet and Richard III will be performed by two companies of actors until September 2.
